A rising star from Zimbabwe, 13-year-old Emmly Lebogang George, has been casting a long shadow on the tennis courts, her exceptional performance earning her a spot at the prestigious 2024 Africa Regional Training Centre in Sousse, Tunisia. The prodigious talent is one of the 16 junior players chosen from across the continent for this illustrious development program, hosted by the Tunisian Tennis Federation and the Confederation of African Tennis. Touted as a future icon of the sport, Emmly now faces a financial hurdle that threatens to stall her progress.

Financial Hurdles and a Cry for Support

Emmly’s participation in the program requires US$10,000, a sum that covers the training center fees and her online schooling costs. As the deadline for her to depart for Tunisia looms, her family is making a desperate appeal for financial aid to ensure Emmly can continue her pursuit of becoming a professional tennis player and representing Zimbabwe on the global stage.

A Precocious Talent

Despite her tender years, Emmly has already made a mark on the tennis landscape. She boasts a tally of 146 medals, including 76 gold, and has been the recipient of numerous national tournaments. In the previous year, she was conferred the Bulawayo Athletic Club Sportsperson of the Year, a testament to her burgeoning talent and hard work.

The Promise of the Training Centre

The training center in Tunisia offers a platform for young players to hone their skills under top-level coaching. Emphasizing individualized training, sport science, fitness development, and tactical understanding, the center also provides a strong competitive schedule. For Emmly, this opportunity is seen as a game-changer that would aid in her growth and development as a tennis player and further cement her status as a promising talent on the African tennis circuit.
