Wilmington Theater Awards to recognize local talent; public invited to vote

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The 11th Wilmington Theater Awards are set to take center stage at Thalian Hall on March 20.

The evening will recognize talented local artists with nominations in 21 categories including performers from over a dozen production companies. Winners will be chosen via a combination of votes from theater companies, the nomination panel and the public.

You can vote in the awards online here through Jan. 30.

Brian Whitted will host the event. He won an award at least year’s Wilmington Theater Awards for his musical direction work on a production of Kinky Boots by the Opera House Theatre Company. He has also worked on Broadway and touring productions of Chicago and worked as a pianist for Debbie Allen of Fame and for NC native Roberta Flack of Killing Me Softly with His Song.

“In keeping with our mission of supporting artists, arts organizations, and audiences, we are pleased to produce the Wilmington Theater Awards. The region’s rich theater scene is on full display at the awards show and allows us to recognize the many people who make the magic happen,” said Rhonda Bellamy, president & CEO of the Arts Council of Wilmington & New Hanover County.”

The nominees for Outstanding Play are:

  • “Blue Stockings,” CFCC Department of Fine & Performing Arts
  • “The Chinese Lady,” Big Dawg Productions
  • “A Murder of Crows,” UNCW Department of Theatre
  • “The Philadelphia Story,” Thalian Association Community Theatre
  • “Waiting for Godot,” Big Dawg Productions

As for the Outstanding Musical category, the nominees are:

  • “A Chorus Line,” Thalian Association Community Theatre
  • “The Color Purple,” Techmoja Dance & Theatre Co.
  • “Next to Normal,” BS Productions & Opera House Theatre Co.
  • “The Producers,” Opera House Theatre Co.
  • “Ragtime,” Opera House Theatre Co.
