WATER levels in the country’s major dams remain on a declining trend, although most hold enough water to last until the next rainy season.

However, in a statement, Zinwa corporate, communications and marketing manager Mrs Marjorie Munyonga said the national dam level average remains higher than the 70.5 percent normally expected during this time of the year.

“Water levels in the country’s major dams remain on a declining trend with the national dam level having dropped to 89.2 percent as at June 19,” she said.

Mrs Munyonga said the downward trajectory is consistent with the increase in water withdrawals from the dams by local authorities and the irrigating community.

Regardless of the declining levels, she said, the dams still hold sufficient water to meet the country’s winter cropping and early summer cropping irrigation requirements.

“The dams still have enough water to see most cities, towns, growth points and rural service centres through to the next rainy season,” said Mrs Munyonga.

The authority, she said, continues to appeal to all water users across the board to use the available water very sparingly since water is a finite resource.

“All users drawing raw water from Zinwa managed dams are advised to ensure that their water use is in terms of water abstraction agreements as is required by the law. These also make it possible for Zinwa to efficiently and sustainably allocate the available water amongst competing needs,” said Mrs Munyonga
