Local golfers still making headlines 10 years later

Since there was zero golf news last week, let’s step back in time 10 years to January 2014 and see how many players are still getting headlines for their golf achievements. Some had left the Chico area, and sadly some have passed away, but the field is still full of long-time golf enthusiasts.

Jim Sands shot an impressive gross score of 73 in the Butte Creek Individual Sweeps Tournament last week and also claimed the low net score (70) to take first place in the blue tees flight. Dave Smith and yours truly tied for the third spot at 72. Gary Heal and Gene Hervieux tied for first in the white tees flight with a net score of 68. Jim Brogden was third with a score of 70. Brian McGovern and Eric Blofsky teed off in the black tee first flight in the Butte Creek Men’s Club 2-Man Scramble Tournament and never looked back. Their gross team score of 61 was awesome enough, but they also shot a net score of 58.35 to take the first spot by six strokes. Ron Hulen and Gordon Ginno (64.5) took the second spot by the slightest of margins over the team of Mark Blofsky and Mike Bechtol (64.6).

First flight winners in the game portion were: 1, Pam Weichert; 2, Mary Borgo; 3, Sandy Seaman. Linda Lindberg, Jody Thompson and Sherri McGhee finished in that order in the second flight.

Spectacular shots

Matt Maderos aced the 3rd hole at Butte Creek while in the company of Dick Brooks and Mike Liddell. Maderos selected a 7-iron for his perfect 158-yard tee shot. Not sure how many holes-in-one Matt has to his credit, but I doubt this one is his first.
