GRANTS PASS, Ore. – Multiple fire agencies responded to a two-alarm structure fire at auto repair shop River City EuroTech in Grants Pass last night.
Right now, multiple fire agencies are responding to a 2-alarm structure fire in Grants Pass.
Owner Matthew Duncan told NewsWatch 12 about the devastation his family has to deal with. Duncan’s son thought a bird was trapped in the bay because they kept hearing a popping sound.
“As we were running to the shop to check it out, I noticed that there was light underneath the center –like an orange glow,” Duncan said. “We unlocked and opened this door, and it was just black smoke.”
Duncan said his shop burned within 20 minutes. He started this business two years ago but has worked for local auto repair shops throughout the valley. He said they tried to salvage as many vehicles as they could, but the fire moved quickly.
“We pushed several cars out of the way but unfortunately, one of the keys was in the shop and we weren’t able to get to it,” Duncan said.
Those were his son’s keys to his car – a project they both worked on since his son was 7 years old.
“My son’s car is gone. We bought it when he was a little kid and it was our father-son project,” Duncan said.
Damage is still being assessed but the Duncan family believes the shop has suffered over $200,000 worth of damages. Two vehicles were burned with a lot more damages.
“I’ve worked on BMWs and automotive cars for over 20 years. We started about two years ago, we built the shop,” Duncan said. “We’ll rebuild and we’ll start over.”
Rural Metro Fire and the Oregon State Fire Marshal were on the scene investigating the cause. OSFM told NewsWatch 12 the investigation could take hours and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
