THE Second Republic’s infrastructure development drive continues after government disbursed US$1.7 million for construction works at Gwanda Magistrate Court.

With infrastructure development being one of the major pillars of the National Strategy One (NDS1), the Second Republic’s commitment to complete all projects that had stalled in the past has seen construction works at the multi-purpose Gwanda Magistrate Court building resuming.

A site visit by the ZBC News revealed that construction equipment is already on site, with workers clearing the area.

“This project stalled in 2004 because of limitations like funding and as you know the stance by the Second Republic that we want to complete all the stalled projects and in Matabeleland South, this is one of them. As we speak US$1.7 million has been disbursed to the contractor to resume the works.

“This is a renowned contractor who has done a lot works and remember he was doing the Chinhoyi Court and completed it. He is also doing Nust hostels which are running concurrently with this,” said Mr Sijabuliso Ncube, public works provincial director for Matabeleland South.

Government is convinced the multi-purpose complex that will house prisons and courts will be the answer to office space challenges being faced by the Judiciary Service Commission in Gwanda.

“It is our hope that the project will be completed in time and I am quite confident, it will be completed given the commitment that has been demonstrated. This will happiness to our people and this is good because the government has demonstrated that it will complete all the stalled projects,” said Mr Ncube.

Government has contracted a renowned Chinese company, Hua Long, to complete the project which had stalled for more than 15 years.
